Let’s talk about colleges based on racial make up.
There was a time in American history where a college education was only available to certain races and wealthy families. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) were created in response to the racial separation. HBCUs were created before 1964 and was responsible for educating black Americans. Today, all colleges are open to everyone including HBCUs. However, colleges are often identified by the types of students the mostly serve (50% or more).
PWI = Predominately White Institutions
HSI = Hispanic Serving Institutions
HBCU= Historically Black Colleges and Universities
In narrowing your choices, keep an open mind. Tour all types of colleges. Spend time on campus, speaking with faculty, staff and students. Where do you feel most comfortable?
